Project Description

We are committed to working with Indigenous communities to ensure their cultural heritage is preserved. For example, at a recent site on the Suncoast Power Project a cultural significant area known as Stones Cairns, was identified as an indigenous burial site. We undertook meetings with the local Indigenous (Gubi Gubi representatives) to agree on a procedure for the works. The Gubi Gubi tribe put forward a requirement that the ground was not to be disturbed when works were undertaken. As a result of the requirement, we implemented a strategy whereby cranes and cherry pickers would be used to remove the trees with zero ground disturbance. We discussed this procedure with key Gubi Gubi representatives, who were comfortable with the approach and our proposed methodology. We then proceeded with the works, with on-site monitoring and supervision from tribe members, Their cultural heritage representatives were satisfied with the outcome, and the support of Lumberjack QLD’s ability to undertake additional cultural sensitive works. We subsequently completed additional works and the Traditional Members of the Gubi Gubi, which involved the rehabilitation of an area to encourage revegetation.
